Program Addendum 2012
Addendum Updated 2-1-12
Dear Friends and Supporters of the SWTX Popular/American Culture Association:
¡Bienvenidos!
Our executive team is finalizing plans for our 33rd Annual Conference being held February 8 – 11, 2012 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel & Conference Center in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Our conference theme: Celebrating “Foods & Culture(s) in a Global Context” honors the cultures of New Mexico whose celebration of food transcends national boundaries making this a truly international celebration in the Land of Enchantment.
The past year has been challenging, our Executive Director, Dr. Phil Heldrich, and organizational founder, Susan Rollins, both died from complications with cancer. We have grieved at their loss but each would have wanted a celebration honoring our friends and supporters. Given much discussion and planning we have highlighted some of the events planned for 2012:
· A special Wednesday “Fire and Ice” night reception featuring special guests and food!
· Keynote luncheon on Friday – “Eat A Burrito for Phil” featuring his favorite food(s) in this sit down affair (the 1st in many years) sponsored by the Hyatt Regency Hotel in conjunction with the American Cancer Society.
· The SWTX PCA/ACA announces that David Peterson, creator of the Dothrakis language for HBO'S A Game of Thrones will make a special appearance at the SWTX PCA/ACA conference. Details forthcoming ... but if you are a SCI FI fan this is an event you will not want to miss!
The New York Times Article on David Peterson
· Special graduate student awards ceremony featuring our 2012 Peter C. Rollins Book Award winner, Alison Macor, discussing her book Chainsaws, Slackers, and Spy Kids: 30 Years of Filmmaking in Austin, Texas (University Texas Press, 2010)
· Enjoy the substantial hotel renovations the Hyatt has undertaken this past year including a new hotel restaurant, Starbucks, wireless access and much more!
Interested in participating? Come celebrate with us!
We look forward to seeing you in Albuquerque in February!
Regards,
Lynnea Chapman King, PhD, Executive Director SWTX PCA/ACA
